Down to 3522.485630 seconds for an improved algorithm (on the 2nd result).

OK, if you go to http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/hidden/scan/ you will see an alpha build of the Muon1 EXE.  I'd like to redo scan 1 with this new client - just replace your usual Muon1 EXE by this one.

It may be slower and is a larger file because I've still got debug tracing switched on.  Feel free to play around in all modes, graphical, etc.  and report any bugs you find here!

A quick reminder:-

I've made some queue.txt files which you can see here:

http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/hidden/scan/1/

What I hopefully want some volunteers to do is:
  • Download one of the queuexxx-xxx.txt files and post on this thread to say you've claimed it.

  • In your Muon1 client, flush any remaining results in results.txt using manualsend.bat (or store them elsewhere) and make sure the Muon1 client is not going to upload during the test (use muon1 -cfg:nonet).  Delete any auto*.sav files.

  • Rename your downloaded file to queuecli.txt, put it in your Muon1 directory, then run muon1 -c -q. Use -b -q and the filename queue.txt if you don't want to see the text output, or just -q and queuegfx.txt if you want fullscreen graphics.

  • When it has finished, all the results should be in results.txt.  Send me this file either via e-mail or a web link in this thread.  Don't delete it!  When you put your client back to normal (-cfg:net), it will be sent as usual and you will be given Mpts credit for the results you produced.

Hopefully as the blocks come back in, I should be able to build up a detailed graph - a cross-section across the optimisation of Linac900Ext10d2, centred around one of the recent best yield results, in the direction of the ls5l parameter (a solenoid length for one of the middle blocks of the linac).

Some useful advice from earlier in the thread (especially if you are on the "upward" sloping part with a lot of best-so-far results)

2) If you dont want to be running each of these tests five times I suggest you download the 100 result sample file and change the file to results.dat - that way you already have cached the current best optimizations and your client wont be running rechecks on -1.777777 results and wasting a bit of time.

Already had some bug reports in v4.45_alpha1 from a colleague:
  • Graphical username input prompt is nearly invisible because I didn't convert the colours from 8-bit

  • HTTP Proxy detection appears to take the settings out of the Windows registry (as set in Internet Explorer), but this won't work if a .pac "proxy autoconfiguration" file is used.  Since I can't parse .pac files I may put a manual proxy override back into config.txt.

  • Windows 7 running on Macbook Pro hangs after showing "- Starting -" in the graphical version, sticks at 100% utilisation on one CPU

I continue to be interested in any reports of unexpected behaviour.

I have been running unstopped since ~the time I posted above with no complaints so far.  It does seem to be significantly slower than the 444d version.  Typically I would get ~200 mpts per autosave cycle, but with this version I am hovering around 50 mpts.  Task manager shows all four cores are being used by the application though.

muon1 -b -q quited immediatly to me too but it was because I forgot to rename queue400-499.txt
Othervise it runs smooth on W7,64bit in -b mode.
Here are results so far.  First can be used to avoid rechecks.  It is interesting that 400 is the highest.  It differs from previous version.

OK, there's an v4.45_alpha2 up on the scans page, which has debugging off so it's faster.  Still not fixed all the bugs yet, so there'll be an "alpha3" too.  See also the versions file for details on what version does what.

running alpha2 now.  ~230 mpts per autosave cycle.  fairly good speedup, thanks

I roughly doubled in speed with the alpha2. from 74-76MPTS for the first save (4mins) to 140. (Q6600 on Vista-64)

Looks hopeful!  The old version's results (4.44d) are in grey, the 4.45_alpha builds are in white (at the left).

There is now a v4.45_alpha3 uploaded in the scan area. You can use any of these alpha versions for running the scans, though for bug testing use the most up-to-date one.

I've added an OpenGL version of viewresults.exe to the v4.45_alpha6 archive. Please test this as much as you can on as many different systems/configurations you can find, the same goes for Muon1. (The less you test the alpha version, the more bugs will be in the release version).

Next, I'd like to do the queue files in the scan3 folder again with v4.45. These zoom in to a small part of the horizontal range (about 5 units) and look at the high-resolution behaviour.  This will help me know if I need to add more resolution (e.g. 4 digits rather than 3) to the genome parameters, as well as better understand the behaviour of the figures of merit in v4.45.

(Desktop's mine, I run it 24/7. Laptop's the wife's, so I only get it when she's at work, hence the differentiation) Same reason why I've only just returned the last unit of scan1)

I've replotted the graph with a bit more.  Notice that while the seed#0 results in white are quite smooth compared to the old grey ones, the rechecked results in red (average of seeds 0,1,2,3,4) are following a slightly different mean.

Graph updated.  I've made the graphing tool upload automatically to the site when it takes a screenshot now!
